Coachless Red Bulls Heading to Florida

To paraphrase a former colleague, the Red Bulls “are late, but they’re making good time.”

The crack, of course, is about the continuing minuet of the club’s sporting director, the Scotsman Andy Roxburgh, as he continues what seems to be a never-ending search for a new coach to replace Hans Backe. Backe, the silver-haired Swede, did not have his contract renewed after the club’s 2012 Major League Soccer season ended in a playoff crash against D.C. United.

On Monday, players gathered at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., one day before traveling to the IMG Academy in Florida for the start of training camp. Also Monday, Roxburgh, and the team’s interim coach Mike Petke, participated in a telephone conference call with reporters.

Though Roxburgh was chirpy, upbeat and positive, he could still not answer the most burning question the Red Bulls confront: Who will be the team’s next coach?
