Sandwiched in between the final round of 2014 World Cup qualifying is the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Important because it is the regional championship for North America, Central America and the Carribean countries. Also important because it offers a chance for fringe players to prove their value as members of a World Cup squad. Also important because it offers some veterans a chance to prove that they can still cotribute at the internatonal level for the USA.
U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann has his team in the Gold Cup quarterfinals with a roster that reflects a group of players seeking a chance to prove themselves. Some for the first time, and some, perhaps for the last time.
Unbeaten going into a quarterfinal matchup with El Sanvador, a third-place group finisher, the U.S. team has been impressive. Easy wins over Belize and Cuba opened group play. A 1-0 win over Costa Rica, in a game dominated by the Americans, set the stage for the knockout round.
