Following the conclusion of the 2015 season on Sunday evening, the National Women’s Soccer League presents an inside look at a few of the important numbers from all 90 regular season matches.
Below is a unique look into the NWSL by the Numbers – 2015 Season:
0 The number of home losses by Seattle Reign FC this year. Coach Laura Havery’s side enjoyed a second-straight undefeated regular-season at home – posting an 8-0-2 mark at Moda Pitch at Memorial Stadium. The Reign were 8-0-4 at home last season.
0 The number of away wins by the Boston Breakers, who became the first team in league history to not win a road game in a season. The Breakers were 0-8-2 on their travels in 2015 and the two points is the record for fewest in a season.
2 The number of teams that overcame a halftime deficit to win this season. Portland Thorns FC rallied for a 2-1 home victory July 3 over Sky Blue FC. Allie Long tied the game from the penalty spot in the 70th minute before fellow midfielder Sinead Farrelly produced the game-winning goal in the 79th minute. Seattle Reign FC also accomplished the feat July 11 with a 4-2 home win against the Western New York Flash behind second half goals from forward Beverly Yanez, defender Rachel Corsie as well as midfielders Amber Brooks and Jess Fishlock.
4 The number of goals FC Kansas City allowed at home all season.
4 The number of consecutive shutouts recorded by FC Kansas City – matching the NWSL record established by Sky Blue FC in 2013. The Blues actually tied the record twice, with four-game shutout streaks from April 23-May and August 8-27.
4 The longest losing streak in the NWSL this season – by the Boston Breakers and Houston Dash.
6 Most consecutive wins in the league this year – by Seattle Reign FC – one shy of the NWSL record set by the Reign and FC Kansas City (both in 2014).
7 Number of goals conceded by Portland Thorns FC in the opening 15 minutes of games this season. Portland also did not score a single goal during the same timeframe.
7 Seattle Reign FC’s league-best goal difference in the first half of games this year. By contrast, the Houston Dash (-3), Portland Thorns FC (-7) and Boston Breakers (-10) were the only teams to post a negative goal difference in the first 45 minutes of matches this season.
8 Most consecutive games unbeaten in the NWSL this season – by Seattle Reign FC (twice).
8 The number of teams to score in the 90th minute or later this season – led by the Chicago Red Stars with three goals, followed by Portland Thorns FC and Seattle Reign FC with two each. The Houston Dash was the only team not to score this year in the last minute of regulation or second-half stoppage time.
9 The number of times the Western New York Flash were shutout this season – one more than Portland Thorns FC – and the most in the league.
9 The number of shutouts recorded by FC Kansas City, the most in the NWSL – and three more than the Chicago Red Stars and Houston Dash.
10 Number of headed goals by Seattle Reign FC, the best total in the league. The Chicago Red Stars scored the fewest goals by header (2) in addition to allowing the most headed goals (8).
10 Points recovered from losing positions this year by Portland Thorns FC and Seattle Reign FC – tied for the most in the NWSL.
10 The longest winless streak in the NWSL this season – by the Boston Breakers.
11 The number of goals allowed by the Boston Breakers in the first 15 minutes of the second half of matches this season – the most conceded during any 15-minute segment of games in 2015.
12 The number of goals scored by Seattle Reign FC in the opening 15 minutes of the second half of games this season (compared with two conceded during the same stretch) – the most of any 15-minute segment of matches this year.
13 Points dropped from winning positions this season by the Chicago Red Stars – two more than any other team in the league.
13 The number of times the Chicago Red Stars and Seattle Reign FC scored the opening goal of the game – most in the NWSL. Portland Thorns FC scored the first goal of a match just five times in 2015 – the fewest in the league this season.
13 Seattle Reign FC’s goal league-best goal difference in the second half of games this year. The Boston Breakers and Western New York had the worst second-half goal difference at minus-11.
15 The number of points massed by Sky Blue FC in games in which they scored one goal or less – one ahead of the Houston Dash, second in the category with 14 points.
16 The number of games involving the Chicago Red Stars decided by one goal – the most in the league. Coach Rory Dames’ side earned 24 points from those encounters, also a league-high.
